– FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
REPUBLICANS RACE TO RAISE $5 MILLION BY 9/11
Just two days to make online donations in support of community organizations
Washington, DC —September 09, 2008— 5by911.com has begun an ambitious online fund-raising campaign to raise five million dollars in just two days. Created in the wake of controversy surrounding speeches at the Republican convention earlier this month that referenced – and angered many – community organizers, the fundraising goal is to put to rest any argument that Republicans are not as concerned about community as Democrats.
“What’s needed is not more talk,” says the creator of 5by911.com. “What’s needed is action. While Democrats complain and Republicans explain, community organizations are in pain. We’ve selected five noble non-profit organizations – from Raising Special Kids, who support families with children with special needs, to the United Way – that stand to benefit a great deal through donations generated by this action.”
Rather than seeking a few large benefactors, 5by911.com is suggesting that one million Republicans donate just five dollars each to any one of the five non-profits, thus resulting in total donations of five million dollars. Donors can choose an organization, donate, then watch the progress of donations to each one.
“A large mass of small donations will have more impact on the issue,” said the fundraising manager. “If the argument about community organizers is ever to be settled, it needs to be settled by the community. In this case, the Republican community can settle it easily, with just a five dollar donation to one of five charities. And the Democrat community will have to recognize the accomplishment and the values that drove the donations. So it’s a win-win-win scenario.”
But the bottom-line for any fundraising effort is the donations. 5by911.com is using the services of firstgiving.com, itself a portal for online donations. Firstgiving.com was established in 2003, and enables anyone to create a fundraising webpage, tied into any one of over 2,000 charitable organizations registered with them. Since their founding, firstgiving.com has raised more than $50 million for charity.
With the viral spirit of the internet, 5by911.com is confident they can reach one million Republicans. “If every person who has written an article online about the subject of the convention speeches – usually trying to explain them to the Democrats or defend a different viewpoint – and if every person who has commented on an article or a blog or even just forwarded an email about it comes to the site, that’s probably a million right there!” laughed the fundraiser. “But seriously, getting to a million in just two days can be done, if everyone passes it around online quickly. Time is of the essence.”
